Extruders - dos and don'ts

Posted by Site Admin on

Hand held extruder guns are commonly used to rapidly fill a hole or skive with raw rubber compound during the tyre repair process.

How they work

Uncured rubber compound formed into a long continuous rope is fed into the pneumatically driven worm drive which is mounted at the front of the gun.
This is warmed enough to reduce the rubber viscosity but not enough to start the curing process.

Under great pressure the warmed compound is then extruded out of the end of the gun so it can be directed to fill the skive without any air bubbles being trapped during the process.

This method of application is considerably quicker than trying to fill a skive by layering up rubber strip by hand.

Suggestion as follows

  1. Ensure you pre heat the extruder gun for at least 5 to 10 minutes before use to allow for full and even temperature along working section.
  2. Always mount the container of rope rubber close to the working area and ensure the rubber is spooling tangle free.
  3. Always keep the rubber off the floor and clean from contamination.
  4. Always remove any excess rubber from the worm drive after use.
  5. If using the extruder with an A+B style compound it is extremely important that it does not harden in the extruder after use – run some regular rope rubber through the system to clean it out.
  6. Keep the extruder lubricated. Add 5ml of air tool lubricant to the drive after any residual rubber has been removed and switch on for 10 seconds to allow oil to spread.
