Key types of tyre repair
Posted by Site Admin on
We see every imaginable type of tyre injury, from the very minor and easily tackled to extremely challenging damage on high value tyres.
This blog breaks down the three most common types of tyre repair.
-
SPOT REPAIRS
- the rubber only of a tyre;
- the rubber and minimal damage has been done to chafer plies, protector plies, and some plies in a belt;
- the rubber and less than 25% of actual body plies in a bias tyre.
When the structural integrity of the tire has not been affected, a spot repair can be performed.
-
MINOR SECTION REPAIRS
A minor penetration of the tyre can be repaired by plugging the external hole and sealing the liner with a repair patch i.e. a minor section repair.
For bias tyres this is often when more than 25%, but less than 75% of actual body plies in have been damaged.
For radial tyres, typically this is when only a small number of the working plies in the belt of the tyre have been damaged and therefore a standard patch can be installed inside the cavity of the tyre.
The patch is smaller with less reinforcing material than would be required for more extensive damage.

MAJOR SECTION REPAIRS
Major section repairs require the use of a fabric (aramid, rayon or steel) reinforced patch – as well as the additional reinforcements these patches are typically larger.
For bias tyres these repairs are needed when more than 75% of actual body plies are damaged.
When a radial tyre injury is significant in size it will be necessary to use a reinforced patch to restore the structural and air-tight integrity to the tyre. All cables that are broken or rusted must be removed.
Whatever type you are undertaking, always stay within the installation guidelines as provided by your chosen patch manufacturer.
