Safety in the work place

Posted by Josh De Carteret on

Working with OTR tyres for earth-moving machinery is potentially dangerous due to their large size and weight, magnitude of air or gas pressures, and the presence of combustible materials. Uncontrolled release of stored energy has the potential to create serious, even fatal, consequences.

  1. Always complete a Job Safety Analysis

A safety assessment to identify health and safety hazards and mitigate exposure to hazards and health risks must be carried out prior to any work. For all new or unfamiliar tasks, every employee involved should first complete a ‘Job Safety Analysis’ (JSA). A JSA should be incorporated into an organisation’s Risk Assessment Management system.

 Job safety checking

  1. Get the correct PPE

Appropriate PPE should be worn at all times whilst inspecting or working with any type of tyre.

 Correct work place PPE

  1. Secure tyres

All tyres should be restrained with appropriate devices to ensure they do not fall over during inspection or while repair processes are being carried out.

 Secured Tyre

  1. Adhere to relevant standards

Repairing tyres must only be performed in accordance with relevant standards, (e.g. AS 4457.2-2008), in conjunction with internal company procedures. Always consult the relevant regional and supplier standards.

  1. Prepare staff for the job

Personnel must have the necessary competencies, information, appropriate tools and equipment in serviceable condition. Comprehensive training is essential.

  1. Identifying hazards

Before beginning any maintenance, service or repairs to tyres and rims, personnel must make certain they have a clear understanding of the hazards associated with the task and the means of controlling risks.

 identiying hazards

It is virtually impossible to anticipate every hazard which may be encountered, therefore each task must be evaluated individually, using an escalated risk assessment process, so it can be accomplished in the safest manner possible.

  1. Before and After Checks

A workplace inspection should be performed at the beginning of each work day or shift.

The repair shop supervisor should conduct, or designate someone to perform a workshop inspection, daily, to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Turn on the lights and check each to make sure they are working properly.
  • Prior to starting the air compressor, check the cleanliness and level of oil and air hoses and line connections.
  • Check each air regulator to ensure they are set to the correct pressure for their application.
  • Drain water, (and oil), from traps at air regulators prior to shift.
